Getting a quote
How do I get a quote?
Call, text, or fill out the form on the contact page. For a move, include your preferred date, both addresses (or zip codes), and the number of bedrooms. For mounting or handyman work, text a photo of the item and the wall or area it is going on. Quotes come back within the hour during the day, usually faster by text.
How is my estimate calculated?
For local moves, the estimate is based on the volume of belongings (bedrooms are a rough proxy), the number of stairs or elevator logistics at each location, the driving distance between the two addresses, and whether you need packing, mounting, or assembly added on. For long-distance Texas moves, it is a flat price based on distance and volume. Every variable is spelled out in the written quote so you can see exactly how the number was reached.
Is the estimate a guaranteed final price?
Local hourly moves are estimated, not guaranteed, because the final cost depends on the actual time worked. That said, the hourly rate and minimum are locked in, and the estimate is based on real experience with similar jobs. If the move is taking longer than expected, we will tell you why and where we stand so there are no surprises when the clock stops. Flat-rate Texas moves are a guaranteed total.
Can I get a quote without committing to anything?
Yes. A quote is just information. There is no obligation, no follow-up sales calls, and no pressure. If the price and date work, you book. If not, no hard feelings.
Booking and scheduling
How far in advance should I book?
A week ahead is ideal. Weekends and the last few days of the month fill up first, especially from April through September. During the slower months (October through March), a few days' notice is usually enough. Same-week and even same-day availability is possible on many jobs, so it is always worth asking even on short notice.
Is a deposit required?
Most local moves and mounting jobs do not require a deposit. Larger moves and long-distance Texas moves may require a small deposit to hold the date, which is applied toward your final balance. The deposit amount and terms are always stated in the quote before you agree to anything. You will never be asked for a deposit you did not see coming.
What if I need to reschedule?
Give at least 48 hours' notice and we will move your booking to a new date at no charge, subject to availability. We understand that closing dates, lease timelines, and life in general shift, and we will work with you.
What if I need to cancel?
Cancellations with at least 48 hours' notice are free. Cancellations with less notice may forfeit a deposit if one was collected, because the date was held and other customers were turned away for it. If something unexpected comes up, call as soon as you know and we will do what we can.
Do you do same-day or last-minute moves?
Often, yes. If the schedule is open, we can be there the same day you call. Last-minute moves happen frequently (a lease falls through, a closing moves up, a landlord gives short notice), and we are set up to handle them. Call or text and we will tell you immediately whether the date is available.
Pricing and payment
How do you charge for local moves?
An hourly rate with a short minimum, usually two hours. The rate, the minimum, and a time estimate are written in your quote before you book. Once the minimum is met, additional time is prorated to the minute, so you pay only for the time actually used. Furniture padding, wrapping, floor protection, basic disassembly and reassembly, and standard moving equipment are all included. There are no stair fees, no heavy-item fees, and no fuel surcharges.
When does the clock start and stop?
The clock starts when loading begins at your first location, not when the truck leaves the garage. It stops when the last item is placed where you want it at the destination and the walkthrough is done. Drive time between the two locations is on the clock. Any time spent waiting for elevator access or building clearance is also on the clock, which is why confirming those details before move day saves money.
How do you charge for long-distance Texas moves?
Moves between Houston and Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, College Station, or anywhere else in Texas are quoted as a single flat price. That price covers loading, driving, unloading, and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly. You know the total before you book and pay that amount when the move is done. No hourly clock, no mileage add-on.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. The quote is the price. There are no fuel surcharges, no stair fees, no heavy-item fees, no long-carry fees, no weekend premiums, no per-item charges, and no add-ons that are not in your written quote. If something comes up on move day that would change the cost (a piano nobody mentioned, a fourth-floor walkup that was described as ground level), we will talk about it before doing the work, not after.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Cash, Zelle, Venmo, and all major credit and debit cards. Card and Venmo payments may include a small processing fee, which is disclosed when you book. We prefer Zelle or cash because they avoid processing fees for both sides. Payment is due when the job is finished. If paying cash, have the exact amount ready.
Should I tip? How much?
Tips are never required or expected, but they are always appreciated. There is no set amount. If the crew showed up on time, took care of your things, and made the day easier, tip whatever feels right. Cash is preferred because it goes directly to the person who did the work. If you are not in a position to tip, a Google review mentioning your mover by name does just as much for the business.
Preparing for move day
What should I do before the movers arrive?
Pack all loose items in boxes, seal and label each box by room. Empty dresser drawers and nightstands. Take everything off shelves. Disconnect electronics and coil the cables (a photo of the cable setup before disconnecting saves time at the other end). Clear a path from every large piece of furniture to the front door. Take down wall art and wrap it or set it aside. Have disassembly tools and hardware bags ready for beds and desks. The more you do before we arrive, the faster and cheaper the move will be.
Do I need to be there during the move?
Someone needs to let us in and do a walkthrough at both locations so we know where everything goes. If you cannot be there yourself, a friend, family member, or building manager with a key works fine. Let us know who it will be when you book so there is no confusion at the door.
What if I live in an apartment or condo with move-in rules?
Most buildings in the Galleria, Midtown, Montrose, and downtown Houston require an elevator reservation, a certificate of insurance (COI) from the mover, and sometimes a loading dock time slot. Confirm these with your building as soon as you have your move date. Give us the building's requirements and we will send the COI directly to your property management. If elevator time is limited, we plan the load order around that window so nothing stalls.
What about stairs?
Stairs are part of the job and there is no additional fee for them. Mention the number of flights at each location when you request your quote so the time estimate is accurate. A third-floor walkup takes longer than a ground-floor unit, and that should be reflected in the estimate, not discovered on move day.
What if it rains on move day?
Light rain does not stop a move. We wrap furniture in blankets and use shrink wrap to keep things dry between the door and the truck. In heavy storms with lightning, we pause for safety until it passes. Houston weather moves fast, and most pauses are 15 to 30 minutes. If a major storm is forecast, we will call you ahead of time to discuss rescheduling.
Can you make multiple stops?
Yes. Picking up items from a storage unit, a relative's garage, or a marketplace seller on the way to the new place is common. Each additional stop adds drive time and loading time to the clock. List every stop when you request your quote so the estimate accounts for it.
During the move
How do you protect my furniture?
Every piece of furniture is wrapped in moving blankets and secured with straps before it goes on the truck. Mirrors, glass tabletops, and TVs are boxed or padded individually. Mattresses go in bags if you provide them (we do not reuse mattress covers between customers for sanitation). We use floor runners and door frame protectors at both locations when needed. Items are loaded heavy and flat against the wall of the truck, stacked and strapped so nothing shifts in transit.
Will you disassemble and reassemble my furniture?
Yes, at no extra charge beyond the time it takes. Bed frames, dining tables, desks, sectional sofas, and other standard furniture are taken apart at the origin and put back together at the destination. Complex pieces (certain IKEA items, bunk beds, standing desks with motors, murphy beds) may take additional time. If you have the original assembly instructions and hardware bags, have them ready. Missing hardware is the number one reason reassembly slows down.
How long will my move take?
A studio or one-bedroom apartment typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A two-bedroom home usually takes 2.5 to 4 hours. A three-bedroom takes 4 to 6 hours. These are working estimates. The actual time depends on the volume of belongings, how well everything is packed and ready, stairs or elevator logistics, parking proximity, and driving distance between the two addresses. Your quote includes a time estimate specific to your move.
What if the move takes longer than the estimate?
You pay for actual time, not the estimate. If the move runs long, we will tell you why (more items than expected, difficult access, a stop that took longer) and where we stand on the clock before continuing. There are no rounding tricks: time beyond the minimum is prorated to the minute.
Can I ride in the moving truck?
No. For insurance and liability reasons, only crew members ride in the truck. Drive your own vehicle (or ride with someone) to the destination and we will meet you there.
Specific items and services
Can you move a washer and dryer? Will you disconnect and reconnect them?
Yes to both. Transporting appliances is included in the move at no extra charge. Disconnecting and reconnecting washers, dryers, and refrigerators is available for a small additional fee per appliance, disclosed in your quote. If you prefer to handle the connections yourself to save money, that is fine too. Note: we are not licensed plumbers or electricians, so we ask customers to inspect all water and gas connections after installation.
Can you move a gun safe?
It depends on the weight and the path. Safes under roughly 300 pounds on a ground floor with a clear path to the truck are usually fine. Heavier safes, safes that need to go up or down stairs, or safes bolted to the floor may need specialty equipment we do not carry. Tell us the make, model, weight, and location when you request your quote and we will tell you whether we can handle it or if you need a safe-moving specialist.
Can you move a piano?
Upright pianos on a ground floor, yes. Grand pianos and baby grands require specialty equipment and a trained piano crew, which we are not. We can refer you to a piano mover in the Houston area if needed.
Can you pick up a Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist purchase?
Yes. Single-item pickups from a seller's home, a store, or a warehouse and delivery to your place are one of the most common jobs we do. You coordinate the pickup time with the seller, we show up, load it, and bring it to you. If it needs assembly or mounting at your place, we handle that too.
Do you offer packing services?
Yes. We offer full packing (we pack the entire home the day before or the morning of the move) and partial packing (just the kitchen, fragile items, or whatever you do not want to deal with). We bring the boxes, paper, tape, and dish packs. Every box is labeled by room. Unpacking at the other end is available too.
Do you offer loading or unloading only?
Yes. If you have a rental truck, a PODS container, a trailer, or a storage unit, we will load it, unload it, or both. This is labor-only pricing with no truck fee. We load the way professional movers load: heavy items low and against the walls, padded, strapped, and stacked so nothing shifts. This is also available for storage unit cleanouts and rearranging furniture between rooms or floors in the same home.
Are there items you cannot move?
For safety and liability: hazardous materials, flammable liquids, propane tanks, gasoline-containing equipment (lawn mowers with fuel in them), firearms, ammunition, perishable food, and live plants on long-distance moves. We recommend personally transporting jewelry, cash, important documents, prescription medications, and anything that is irreplaceable or has sentimental value beyond its replacement cost. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask when you get your quote.
TV mounting, installation, and handyman
Can you mount my TV the same day you move me?
Yes. Most customers who book a move and a TV mount get both done in one visit. Once the furniture is placed and the truck is unloaded, the TV goes up. If you have a mount you want used, have it on hand. If you need one, tell us the TV size and wall type and we will bring the right mount.
What types of walls can you mount on?
Drywall (always anchored into studs, never toggle bolts for TVs), plaster, brick, concrete, and tile. We bring the drill bits, anchors, and hardware for each wall type. If the wall is unusual or you are not sure what is behind it, text a photo and we will tell you what to expect before we arrive.
Can you hide the TV wires inside the wall?
On standard drywall with no fire blocks or horizontal framing in the path, yes. We cut two small openings (behind the TV and behind the furniture below it), run the cables through the wall cavity, and patch around the plates for a clean look. On brick, concrete, tile, or plaster walls where cutting is not practical, we install a surface-mounted cable raceway that is painted or color-matched to the wall. We will tell you which method your wall gets before we start so there are no surprises.
How much weight can a wall mount hold?
A mount properly anchored into two studs can hold well over 100 pounds, which covers every consumer TV on the market (most 75-inch TVs weigh 50 to 70 pounds). The mount's own weight rating is what matters, and we match the mount to the TV. We do not use drywall anchors alone for TV mounts.
What else can you mount or install?
Floating shelves, closet shelving systems, mirrors (including heavy floor-to-ceiling mirrors), framed art, gallery walls, curtain rods, blinds, soundbars, projector mounts, bathroom hardware (towel bars, toilet paper holders, shower rods, medicine cabinets), ceiling fans (existing wiring only, no new electrical), and light fixtures (same). If it goes on a wall or ceiling, ask.
Do you do handyman work without a move?
Yes. Furniture assembly (beds, desks, dressers, bookcases, standing desks, cribs, changing tables, patio furniture, grills), interior and touch-up painting, patching drywall holes, caulking, weather stripping, fixture swaps, door hardware, and general small repairs. These are booked on their own and priced by the job or by the hour depending on the scope. Text a photo and a description and you will get a quote back.
Do you do IKEA assembly?
Yes. IKEA furniture is one of the most common assembly requests. PAX wardrobes, KALLAX shelving, MALM dressers, HEMNES beds, BRIMNES daybeds, standing desks, and kitchen carts are all jobs we have done many times. Have the boxes at the location and, if possible, do not open them yet, as mixed-up hardware bags slow things down. If instructions are missing, we can usually work from the IKEA app.
Damage, insurance, and trust
What if something gets damaged during my move?
Take photos and contact us within 72 hours. We carry the Texas state-required minimum valuation coverage on every move, and we will work with you toward a fair resolution: repair, replacement, or compensation. We do not dodge damage claims or make the process difficult. Accidents are rare (our Google reviews reflect that), but when they happen, we own them.
Can I purchase additional coverage beyond the minimum?
The state-required minimum valuation is based on weight (60 cents per pound per item), which means a 50-pound TV that breaks would be valued at $30 under minimum coverage, not its replacement cost. If you want full replacement value protection, we recommend purchasing a third-party moving insurance policy through a provider like MovingInsurance.com before your move. We are happy to help you understand the options.
How do I know I can trust you in my home?
Start with the reviews. We have a 5.0 rating on Google from real customers who name the jobs and describe the experience. We are a registered Texas household goods mover, which means we passed the TxDMV's registration and insurance requirements. We are owner-operated, so the people in your home are the people whose names and reputation are on the line. And we will send a certificate of insurance to you or your building before move day on request.
Licensing and service area
Are you a licensed mover in Texas?
Yes. J Will Move It is registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) as a household goods motor carrier, which is required by Texas law for any company that moves personal belongings for compensation. You can verify any mover's registration at txdmv.gov using their TxDMV certificate number. We will provide ours on request. We also carry the required cargo insurance and liability coverage.
What areas do you serve for local moves?
We are based in Bellaire and cover all of Southwest Houston and the surrounding area: West University Place, Meyerland, Braeswood, the Galleria and Uptown, Montrose, Midtown, the Medical Center, River Oaks, the Heights, Katy, Sugar Land, Missouri City, Pearland, Stafford, Spring, and The Woodlands. If your move is in the greater Houston area, we almost certainly cover it.
Do you do long-distance moves outside of Texas?
Not at this time. We handle moves anywhere within Texas (Houston to Austin, Houston to Dallas, Houston to San Antonio, and so on). For moves out of state, we recommend getting quotes from licensed interstate carriers with a USDOT number authorized for interstate household goods.
Who will show up on move day?
Jose and Will, the owners. J Will Move It is owner-operated, which means the people who answer the phone, write the quote, show up on move day, and handle your TV mount are the same people. You will never get a random crew you have not spoken to or vetted.
How is J Will Move It different from the big moving companies?
Three things. First, you deal with the owners from the first text to the last box, not a call center that dispatches a crew you have never met. Second, the people quoting the job are the people doing the job, so the estimate is based on real experience, not a formula. Third, the business covers both the move and the work that comes after it (mounting, assembly, small repairs), so the TV is on the wall and the bed is built the same day the truck pulls away. Most big companies do not offer that, and hiring a separate handyman adds another appointment, another cost, and another stranger in your home.
Ready when you are.
Written quote within the hour during the day. Same-week availability on most jobs.
